Velma L. Hughes was born on March 2, 1938, in Birmingham, Alabama, to the late Nellie Marie Foster and Jesse Jones. She was the youngest of five sisters, preceded in death by Willie Ann, Annie Jean, Annie Beatrice, and Jessie Mae, as well as her great-grandchild, Royal Jackson.
Velma grew up in Furman, Alabama, under the care of her uncle and aunt. She attended Hopewell School in Furman for her elementary and middle school years before continuing her education at the historic Snow Hill Normal and Industrial Institute in Snow Hill, Alabama. During the summers, she traveled to Cleveland to spend time with her mother until she eventually moved there, graduating from St. Edward Parish High School.
She was blessed with six children-three daughters and three sons-Veronica, Adrian, Donna, Alphonso Jr., Juanetta, and Richard, all of whom she loved and sacrificed for unconditionally. Though not wealthy in material possessions, Velma's home was rich in love and support, where she poured her heart into her family.
After staying home to care for her children until her youngest began school, Velma began working at the Superior Bindery. In 1980, she joined the Cleveland Racquet Club, where she worked until her retirement.
Velma was baptized at Mt. Hermon Baptist Church on October 26, 1969, by the late Pastor Rev. Robert Fuller and remained a faithful member for fifty-four years until she was called to her eternal home. She actively served in many church organizations, including the Revelation Choir, Sanctuary Choir, Hospitality Committee, and Ladies Guild. She also participated in the Missionaries for God with her good friend Sister Janice Poole; an organization started by her mother-in-law in 1961.
Velma was known for her sharp dressing and impeccable style, always exuding class and elegance wherever she went. Whether attending church, social gatherings, or even casual outings, she dressed with sophistication and carried herself with grace, earning the admiration of those around her.
Family and community were at the heart of Velma's life, especially during the holidays. Christmas was a truly magical time in her home. She put great effort into decorating, with her stunning Christmas tree receiving compliments year after year. Velma's famous dressing and desserts were the highlight of family gatherings, and her home was always open to loved ones. She created a warm and inviting atmosphere where no one was a stranger, and everyone felt the joy of the season.
Velma also loved to travel and attended many social events with close family and friends, including her mother-in-law, Annie Ruth Roberts, and lifelong friends like Mother Della Gray, Mrs. Amentha Clay, Deacon George Reid, Deaconess Annette Reid, Deacon Freddie Barnes, Deaconess Annie Barnes, and Sister Marcia Arnold. Their friendship, spanning over 50 years, was a source of joy for Velma, who lovingly referred to them as her sisters and brothers. Sadly, some of her dear family & friends, including her mother-in-law preceded her in death.
Velma also adopted others as her extended family- Ms. Deanna Merritt, Sister Debbie Hall, Sister Aderica Grier, Deacon Tyrone, and Deaconess Pam Burton-who showed her immense kindness and love during her illness. Her family is forever grateful for their support. Special thanks are also extended to Sister Geraldine Ellington-Howard, Trustee Paul Ewing, Trustee Wife Betty Ewing, Mother Ruby McNeil, Deacon Carl Scruggs, Mother Britt, Sister Bacon, Sister Pauline Bell, and Myra, who affectionately called her "Mother Hughes," for their comforting visits and encouragement.
Known affectionately as "Mz. Vee," Velma had a vibrant sense of humor and loved making people laugh. After giving God praise at Sunday service and witnessing the wedding of her grandson the following Monday, she was called to her eternal rest on Tuesday, September 3rd, 2024.
Velma leaves behind a legacy of love and faith cherished by her children: Veronica "Roni" Jones (Gary), Adrian "Bubba" Jones (Michele), Donna "Precious" Mc Cruel, Alphonso "Jr'Al" Hughes Jr., Juanetta Johnson (Keith), and Richard Hughes. She also leaves nine grandchildren: Tony (Candy), Eve (Andrei), Darnell, Chanel, James Jr., Alton Jr. (Davilla), Jon, Keitia (Tyrus Leach), and Danielle; 21 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and dear friends.
A public viewing will be held on September 19, 2024, from 3:00PM to 5:00PM at the House Of Peace Funeral Home, 4105 East 71st Street, Cleveland, OH.
