Juanita Powell Obituary

Mother Juanita Powell was born on January 4th, 1931 in Lexa Arkansas, Juanita Nelly was the oldest child of 11 siblings born to the proud parents of Semo Nelly and Ethel Yarbrough. At the age of 9, Mother Powell accepted Christ as her Savor. She moved to Detroit, Michigan where she attended school, later graduated from Miller High school. 

In 1960, Mother Powell graduated from Wilkens School of Cosmetology where she became one of the finest hair stylist, manager and teacher. In 1952, She met and married Henry Mitchell and both became the proud parents of seven beautiful children, Diane, Kenny, Gary, Sonya, Ronnie, Susan, and Tammy Jean. In the year of 1981, Mother Powell married Phillip Powell Sr., and together they loved and cared for a family 15. Mother Powell life was a life of service to the Lord. She was a member of Assembly Baptist Church for 20 years under the leadership of Pastor Willie Judie where she taught Sunday school and the mission of the Lord. Mother Powell later joined First Greater New Zion, led by Pastor A. Maiden where she worked faithfully as the President of the Senior choir and on the Mother Ministry board. On February 7, 2016, Mother Powell joined Allen Chapel Missionary Baptist church under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Leon Thompson where she also served on the Mother Ministry Board. In 2020 Mother Powell moved to Atlanta, GA to live with her daughter- Susan Chennault where she continued to serve the Lord. 

Mother Powell was a fun, loving, caring person who was known to many as a dear and genuine friend. She was the president of a social club, where she brought love and fellowship to her community. She had a passion for Bingo, singing gospel music, traveling, and spending quality time with her friends and family. 

Mother Powell was preceded in death by her children Diane, Kenny, Gary, Ronnie, and Tammy. 

Mother Powell departed this life on August 10th, 2024. She leaves to cherish her memory, two daughters, Sonya Mitchell and Susan Chennault (Lamond Chennault- Son-in-law); 10 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and 7 great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Sulenar Haggins and Norma Jean Scott, 5 brothers, Ivory Neely (Clara) John Neely (Fannie) Freddie Neely (Cassandra) Melvin Neely and Wilfred Neely (Elaine); along with a host of cousins, nieces, nephews other relatives and friends. 

A public viewing will be held on August 30, 2024, from 3:30PM to 5:30PM at the House Of Peace Funeral Home, 4105 East 71st Street, Cleveland, OH. The Celebration of Life will be held August 31, 2024, with a 10:30AM Wake and 11:00AM Service at Allen Chapel Missionary Baptist, 9333 Miles Ave, Cleveland, OH
