James Smith Obituary

We are saddened to announce the transition of Mr. James Smith.

James "Red Dog" Smith, affectionately known by many simply as Red, was born in Weirton, West Virginia on August 3, 1950. Anyone who ever attended one of his iconic birthday parties knows just how much he treasured celebrating that special day each year. He was the oldest child of Joseph A. Smith and Dorothy L. White, naturally stepping into the role of a protective and caring older brother.

In high school, he was known as "Baby Jim," a nickname that followed him through his days at Steubenville High School. He graduated in 1968, proudly playing football and basketball, leaving a memorable impact on the field, on the court, and among his classmates.

Red married Cheryl Smith in 1978 in Cleveland, Ohio, and together they welcomed two children, Terryl and Rasheda, who remained the pride of his heart. Though the marriage later ended, the family they created continued to be a source of joy, connection, and love throughout his life.

Red worked hard throughout his life, spending many years at Barger Metals and TRW. His dedication and relentless work ethic earned him his famous sayings: "I get money every day," and, "I worked them jobs for forty years!" These catchphrases reflected not only his hustle but also his deep commitment to providing for the people he loved.

Beyond his work, Red was best known for the warmth, humor, and energy he brought everywhere he went. Whether he was frying up his famous chicken, cruising around in his limo, or keeping everyone entertained as the family jokester, he had a remarkable ability to bring joy into any room. You simply couldn't leave his presence without getting a good laugh.

Red is preceded in death by his brother Decosta Smith, and his parents, Dorothy and Joseph. He is survived by his siblings Monique Davis, Michelle Thompson, Joseph Brown, and Josea Brown.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his children, Terryl (Sonji) and Rasheda; his grandchildren, Kevin, Antoine, Tasiah (Travis), Danielle, Tierra (Tyree), Stephen, Tia, Rasheed, and Dylan-and his nine great-grandchildren. He is also lovingly survived by his aunts, Barbara Garlington and Brenda Dugan, along with a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends who cherished him.

James "Red Dog" Smith leaves behind a legacy filled with laughter, devotion, and unforgettable memories. His larger-than-life presence, full of heart and humor, will be deeply missed and forever cherished by all whose lives he touched.

A Memorial will be held on December 5, 2025, with a 10:00AM Wake and 10:30AM Service at Everlasting Baptist Church, 579 Eddy Rd, Cleveland, OH. Rev. DeWitt Chappell, Jr., Pastor.
