Gladys Canty Obituary

We are saddened to announce the transition of Ms. Gladys M. Canty.

Gladys Mae Canty, née Bryant, was born on June 8, 1945, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Philip and Marie Bryant. She was the youngest of nine children and graduated from John Jay High School in 1961. Early in life, she accepted Christ at an early age.

On August 27, 1966, Gladys married Eugene Canty. Although they later divorced, their union was blessed with two daughters, Tondria Maria Canty and Toygenea Venetta Canty.

Gladys worked for temporary agencies and companies such as Blue Cross Blue Shield until 1977, when she began her career with Wayne County. She started as a keypunch operator and, at the time of her retirement in 1994, served as a clerk typist within the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office. In addition to her work duties, she was a proud member of AFSCME and served as a union steward during her career. She also continued her education by taking classes at Wayne County Community College, where she earned a place on the honor roll and was a member of Phi Theta Kappa.

Gladys enjoyed playing card games such as Spades, Bid Whist, and Uno, along with other board games that brought laughter, conversation, and togetherness. Music was also a meaningful part of her life, especially gospel music, which filled her heart and home with comfort and praise. She was especially fond of The Winans, The Clark Sisters, Kurt Carr, The Kurt Carr Singers, Richard Smallwood and many others whose music reflected faith and joy. She also had a special love for movies, enjoying favorites such as the Mission: Impossible series, The Temptations, and Singin' in the Rain, which brought her entertainment, joy, and many memorable moments.

She departed this life on August 1, 2026, in Farmington Hills, Michigan. She was preceded in death by her parents, Philip and Marie Bryant, and her beloved siblings Eulah Poindexter, Carl Bryant, Marie Norman, Morris Bryant, Liz Blany, Alberta Truss, and Rosemary Weems.

In addition to her daughters, Gladys leaves to cherish her memory her sister, Roberta Moody; five grandchildren: Marcel Deante Smith, Kristoffer Eugene Canty (Allissa), Kamaria Mechelle Smith, Dominique Renée Canty, and Brandon Alan Canty; and two great-grandchildren: Sylvester Javonta Gilmore Jr. and Krislyn Irene Canty; and a host of nephews, nieces, and friends.

Gladys's life and legacy will be remembered with love by her family, friends, and all who knew her.
