Clarence Byrd Obituary

Clarence G. Byrd Jr., lovingly known as "Uncle Brother" was born March 20, 1933, to the union of Clarence G. Byrd Sr. and Blanche (Hawkins) Byrd in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Raised in Indianapolis, Clarence attended IPS School #26 and later transferred to St. Bridget Catholic School. Third of seven children, he quickly gained his nickname as "Brother" amongst his siblings. Their mother, Blanche, took them to church every Sunday at Church of the First Born Saints and taught them how to pray and the importance of knowing God. Every day they would all pray together before walking to school.

The love of family and hard work were essential and growing up in the Byrd family and kept them close knit throughout the years. Uncle Brother at a young age started working as a paper boy for Indy Star. Being the outgoing child he was, he moved to Chicago, IL to live with family and worked various jobs in his late teenage years. By his early twenties he had moved to Cleve- land, OH working as a waiter on a Merchant Marine ship and came back to Indy, where he worked at the Standard Gasoline Station, owned by his uncle, Herb Hawkins. He eventually moved back to Cleveland and worked for Woodland Supply Company, from which he retired. He served as a Deacon at Covenant Community Church, in Cleveland, Ohio for several years under the leadership of Pastor Lawrence Boone and current Pastor Eddie Burge III.

Uncle Brother in his siblings' eyes, was seen as "Superman" with the strength of an ox. On every occasion, he was stylish, handsome, and always knew how to tell a story. Family and friends knew, that even if he had a T-bone steak today, he did not believe in leftovers for tomorrow. Uncle brother had a booming voice that commanded attention, and when he hugged or patted your back, he could knock the wind right of you. The love of family, his parents instilled in him, remained as he went on many family vacations and family reunions across the states. In December of 2005, he married his loving wife, Associate Pastor Sarah Eberhardt-Byrd. Once married Uncle Brother loved introducing her as, "My Wife" to everyone he talked to. Through the years his wife showed such great love and devotion towards him. From traveling and taking road trips to see the family, Sarah remained a strong, caring and dedicated wife.

On September 5, 2024, Clarence G. Byrd Jr., departed this life to gain his eternal life.

He was preceded in death by his father, Clarence G. Byrd, mother, Blanch (Hawkins) Byrd, oldest sister, Dorothy Louise, brothers, Wayman Byrd Sr., Paul Byrd, Steve Byrd, and sister, Delores Fingers-Yarbough.
