Check McGhee Obituary

Mr. Check McGhee was born March 4, 1935, in Pope, MS to Rosie Lee Brown and Homer McGhee. He departed this earthly life on November 7, 2023, at the age of 88 years. Check was the eldest of nine children. He relocated to Cleveland, Ohio at a young age and began his professional career in the Construction field. Check had two sons from his previous marriage and he and his wife Vera Platt McGhee had a son and daughter. He moved his family for a brief period to Saginaw, Michigan while he worked with the crew constructing the I-75 and I-675 highways through the city. He relocated his family back to Cleveland at the completion of that project and continued working in construction until he retired from the Cook Construction Company.

Check loved baseball, hunting, fishing, watching westerns, and sitting on his porch. He was such a down-to-earth, soft-spoken, easy-going, and gentle man who loved his family. Everyone who knew Check loved him and had the utmost respect for him. He will truly be missed by all. Check leaves to cherish his memory one son, Kevin (Deidra) Anderson, and one daughter, Kimberly Anderson, of Cleveland, Ohio; grandchildren, Sharde Anderson, Brandy Anderson, Kevin Jr., DeAndre Anderson, Ke’Aandra McGhee, Terrance (Krystal) Holmes, Tamika (Aaron) McGhee, Crystal Bowling, Tanisha Frazier, Sherice Byrd, Jerry “JT” McGhee, Jerrett McGhee; fifteen great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; three brothers, William (Kristi) Phillips and Harry Phillips, of Saginaw, Michigan, Larry (Fonda) Phillips of Kansas City, Kansas; two sisters, Bobby (Willie) Haynes of Saginaw, Michigan, Shirley George of Grand Rapids, MI; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, and friends. Check was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Henderson McGhee, loving spouse, Vera Platt McGhee; parents, Rosie Lee Washington and Homer McGhee; sons, Jerry and Terry McGhee; granddaughter, Mirracclle Anderson Morris; brother, Earnest Philips, II, sisters, Rosie Mae Cotton and Margaret Jean Phillips; brother-in-law, Robert George.
