Annie Coachman Obituary

Annie Laura Coachman 101 years old passed away peacefully at home on January 1, 2024 surrounded by her family. 

Annie Laura began her life journey on May 6, 1922 in Portland, Arkansas. She was one of nine children born to the late Hattie & Joe Layton Sr. Annie Laura grew up in the rural south with her siblings, six brothers: Luscious, Lumen, Joe, Willie, Linwood and Elbert and two sisters: Florence and Lubertha who all preceded her in death. She is also, preceded in death by her husband, John, daughter, Ann Stringer and two grandsons David and Robert. 

Annie Laura received her early education in the local school district in her hometown of Portland, Arkansas. She always encouraged her family and friends to obtain the best education possible. She used her skills and maternal instincts to provide a happy home for her children. 

Annie Laura moved to Cleveland, Ohio in 1955 with her two daughters. In 1957 she met up with John Coachman, the love of her life and the two were united in Holy Matrimony. In this union one son was born and all three children, enjoyed the love of their parents. 

Annie Laura confessed Christ at an early age and joined the family church in Arkansas. Upon moving to Cleveland, Ohio, she joined St. Timothy Baptist Church. Later on, she moved her membership to the Mt. Gillion Missionary Baptist Church where she served faithfully for many, many years as an Usher. Her greatest joy was serving on the Cedar side door as an Usher. Down through the years, she greeted generations of families. At 101 years, young Annie Laura enjoyed attending church, spending time with family and friends and going to the shopping center with her great granddaughter Charese. In her lifetime, she experienced the Civil Rights Movement 1st hand, saw the tapestry of America change and witnessed the inauguration of the 1st Black President. She enjoyed bowling, shopping and traveling to the National Baptist Convention, USA Incorporated where she took great pleasure in attending sessions with her friends Queen Bee and Sue. 

Annie was a Domestic worker and became a family jewel to the families that employed her. Up to the end of her life, she still had a special love for Suzy Remer and her two sons and they reciprocated the Love. 

Annie Laura was a loving and devoted Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother & Great-Great Grandmother. She leaves to cherish her loving memories two children Ethel Henderson(Charles) and John Coachman. Six grandchildren: Teresa, Carnell, Darnice, Johnny, Jason and Nicholas. Eleven great-grandchildren, twenty-eight great- great grandchildren, a host of nieces, cousins, relatives and friends including a loving church family who will miss her dearly.

A public viewing will be held on January 12, 2024 from 4:00PM to 6:00PM  at the House Of Peace Funeral Home, 4105 East 71st Street, Cleveland, OH (off of 71st Street and Harvard Avenue). The Celebration Of Life services will be held on January 13, 2024, 9:30AM Wake, 10:00AM Service at Mt Gillion Baptist Church, 7025 Cedar Ave, Cleveland, OH. Interment will be at Knollwood Cemetery. 

Face Mask Will Be Required For Service.
